Germany's challenges to post-war settlement
Challenge the Treaty of Versailles: Withdrawal from the Disarmament Conference
Article 8 of the Covenant of the League of Nations:
Members: Recognise maintenance of peace requires reduction of national armaments → Lowest point consistent with national safety, enforcement by common action of international obligations
The difficulties in implementing an international disarmament policy meant that it took longer for an international conference to be organised.
Britain and France did not agree about the way that Germany should be treated, with Britain indicating that it was prepared to make concession to Germany.
Hitler pulled out of both the Conference and the League of Nations, believing that the French government set this organisation to keep Germany weak and incapable of self-defence.
PLEBISCITE/Referendum
: is a direct vote in which an entire electorate is invited to vote on a particular proposal. This may result in the adoption of a new law.
The plebiscite gave Hitler the approval for his request.
Hitler's withdrawal from the talks and the League gave him the freedom he needed for Germany.
Undermining Collective Security: The Non-Aggression Pact with Poland
Germany withdrew from the League, undermining collective security and worrying their east and west borders.
Poland, who felt vulnerable, signed a 10 year Non Aggression Pact with Germany in January, 1934.
Germany would be in total danger if invading Poland right away, considering both Poland, and France had an alliance
Seemed to benefit both parties, while proving to be of a worrying situation for other countries
Poland had less incentive to worry about Germany's rearmament and their growing army.
Germany secured its eastern borders, only having to pay attention to their west now.
France's security system in the Eastern Europe was weakened. Their diplomatic encirclement around Germany was broken with the pact
Sheds light on Germany that made it seem a peaceful nation for not attacking Poland that time, and that their diplomatic policies are of statesmanship
Hitler had no intention of keeping the Non Aggression Pact with Poland however.
Planned to attack Poland anyway in the near future
Public in Germany disliked the pact, while other countries did. This is because Germany's people felt like Poland was a liability
