Measurement of pollutants
Synergism
The combined effects of multiple substances that can result in far worse problems than each acting separately
Bioaccumulation
Occurs when a chemical breaks down slowly or does not break down at all and is taken up by plant/ animals
Acute
The adverse health effects from a single dose
Synergistic effects
Chronic
Refers to the adverse health effects of repeated exposure over a relatively long period of time
Dosage
Dependant on exposure, and is the amount of chemical absorbed per unit of body weight
Bioconcentration
A type of bioaccumulation, the build up of chemical is taken directly from the environment
Exposure
A measure of how much of a pollutant is exposed to in a given amount of time
Biomagnification
The increase in concentration of a substance from one link in a food chain to another
LD50
A term used to describe the dose of a substance that is sufficient to kill a percentage (usually 50%) of the specified test animal within a set period of time
Dermal absorption
Chemicals are absorbed through the skin
Ingestion
Chemicals enter the body in the food or drink consumed
Inhalation
Substances enter the body during respiration. The chemical is absorbed through the lung membrane and into the blood
