Rose sees a different looking bird and exclaims to her mother “Look at that funny looking bird, it must be weird.” Rose’s mother explains to her that not all creatures look the same, and that it doesn’t mean they are any less of a creature because of their outer appearance. As most children, Rose does not believe her mother and continues to wonder where this weird bird came from, since it is so different from the normal blue birds, she sees all the time. The next day she sees the same bird at the watering whole her herd is drinking from. She is wary and moves away from the bird as if it has a disease. Her mother notices and is disappointed in Rose. Her mother, Pearl, suggests “Maybe you should ask the bird what its name is.” Rose listens to her mother and slowly approaches the bird. She quietly asks, “What is your name?” The bird says, “My name is Sarah, what is your name?” Rose responds, telling her, her own name and asks where she is from. She says that her parents recently migrated her to this area from a lake in Britain. Rose notices that Sarah’s voice sounds so different than her own. Rose blurts out, “Why do you sound funny when you talk?” Sarah seems offended and tells Rose that she is the one with the weird accent. For the first time Rose seems to realize that although she thought this new bird was completely different from her, she didn’t realize that to others Rose is probably a little weird too. Rose goes back to her mother and tells her about Sarah. Pearl exclaims, “Sarah sounds like a great bird, you should be friends!” Rose looks for Sarah the next day at the watering hole and is glad when she sees her standing near some of the giraffes. Rose apologizes, “Sarah I am sorry for thinking you were weird just because you look different than other birds.” Sarah is eager to find new friends since she moved so far away from her other friends and she accepts Rose’s apology. Sarah asks Rose, “Do you think we can play together?” Sarah and Rose start to play together every day and learn that they like all of the same things. They both like to play and splash in the water, they both like to play hide and seek, and now they both like to meet new friends even if they don’t look the same as them. Rose and Sarah are the best of friends!
I have created this new character, Sarah, using Panoform. Please visit my creation and use it as an example to create your own new character. Once you have created your unique character, I want you to share it with a classmate and explain how your character learns to include others and not discriminate. (Mikayla Green's addition)
This is Sarah, the character I created. Visit the Panoform website to bring the image to life, and show your friends your unique character too!
