The organism enters upper airway and multiplies in the epithelium and spreads to lungs via blood or secretions

Inflammation in alveoli, alveolar ducts and insterstitial spaces of the alveolar walls
S/S: Increased work of breathing, productive cough, fever, purulent sputum, chest pain

Sputum examination: 1. Rinse mouth 2. Breath deep several times 3. Cough deeply 4. Expectorate into sterile container

Incidence

With viral pneumonia, men appear to be affected more commonly than women.
Mycoplasma pneumonia is believed to be the most common cause of pneumonia in young adults and occurs most commonly in males.
Community-acquired pneumonia is very common in adults over age 65 and usually results from the influenza virus.
