Controlling Blood Glucose & Diabetes
If blood glucose level is too high
The glucose then moves from the blood into the liver and muscle cells
Insulin makes the liver turn glucose into glycogen (storage molecule)
Insulin is secreted by the pancreas
The blood glucose level has now been restored back to normal
If the blood glucose level is too high, then insulin is added
If blood glucose level is too low
Glucagon makes the liver turn glycogen into glucose
The glucose is then released into the blood by the liver
Glucagon is secreted by the pancreas
The blood glucose level has now been restored back to normal
If the blood glucose level is too low, glucagon is added
Type 1 Diabetes
This makes sure that glucose is rmoved from the blood quickly once food has been digested so the level doesent get excessively high
Its very effective and the amount of injections needed depends on how active the person is and what they eat
People with type 1 diabetes need to inject insulin through the day (usually around mealtimes)
People may also try to eat less rich carbohydrate food or do more exercise to remove excess glucose so they don't need to inject as much
This is where the pancreas produced very little amounts or no insulin meaning a persons blood glucose level can rise to a level than ca kill them
Type 2 Diabetes
This can cause a persons blood sugar level to rise to a dangerous level
Being overweight can increase you chance of developing type 2 diabetes (obesity is a major risk factor in development of diabetes)
They still produce insulin but their body cells don't respond properly to the hormone
Can be controlled by eating carbohydrate controlled diet and doing regular exercise
This is where a person becomes resistance to their own insulin
