According to a Budweiser statement, its Freedom Reserve Lager was inspired by George Washington's handwritten recipe found in his military journal. Backed by history, patriotism, veteran support, and charity, Budweiser intends to collaborate with alcohol delivery service Drizly to make Freedom Reserve Lager available nationwide.
In October 2018, Anheuser Busch InBev (AB InBev) reintroduced its popular Michelob Ultra beer in the UK, as appetite for low alcohol beer continues to grow 20% year-on-year among British consumers. The beer has been reformulated to contain fewer calories and is targeted towards health-conscious consumers.
In June 2018, Belgian brewing company AB InBev, in collaboration with marketing company Kiip, has introduced a blockchain-based ad campaign. The campaign will use Ethereum’s blockchain technology. AB InBev expects the use of blockchain technology to provide accurate and meaningful customer insights.
In February 2019, Scotland's BrewDog will fly its investors in a Boeing 767 from London to Ohio. The investors — called ‘Equity Punks’— will be served a limited-edition beer specifically brewed for high altitudes in-flight, followed by a visit to the company’s US brewery and hotel.
In October 2018, Scottish craft beer manufacturer BrewDog opened a new bar in Canary Wharf, London which accepts payments in Bitcoin. The bar also features a new draught beer whose price will fluctuate according to the company’s price movement in the FTSE 100 Stock Exchange.
In November 2017, Drifter Brewing Company released a Belgian-style Tripel matured in the Atlantic Ocean for a year. The company utilised the ocean’s darkness and temperature — ideal for its desired fermentation process — and anchored the beer in the Atlantic for a 'secondary-fermentation' process.
After Heineken's home draft system SUB faced a backlash, the company created an e-mail series about how the machines work. Sent to users on a weekly basis, the emails educate users about the system, give flavour ideas and also remind them to replenish the SUB.
An automatic beer brewing machine named HOPii launched on Kickstarter in September 2017. With HOPii, beer lovers can make craft beers at home. The company sends an ingredient pack including wort, yeast and other requirements. Simply pressing the 'Start' button ferments them into a perfect pint.
Wine
Australian company Fourth Wave Wine commissioned Sydney design agency Denomination to transfer various of their bottled brand personalities to a new collection of 250ml canned wines. The look and personality translated successfully, helping the brand create four-can package formats for ultimate convenience.
Discount supermarket Aldi has become the first in the UK to stock an orange wine as a part of its August Wine Festival Range. Popular in Canada and Italy, orange wine is basically a white wine made like a red wine — leaving the skins on during the fermenting process.
Millennials are driving the wine industry towards canned wine as they seek more convenience and a relaxed attitude. In Canada, Colio Estate Winery unveiled its Girls Night Out 250ml slender can of rosé, and Between the Lines Winery introduced Outset, a sparkling canned wine.
Blue wine by Spanish startup Gik Live! is growing in popularity. Launched in 2015, the company exports wine to 21 different countries, with America being its largest market. Its blue colour is derived from natural pigments found in fruits and flowers, making the hue completely natural.
Liqueur
Aldi released a new Gingerbread Gin Liqueur, just in time for the holidays. Available in stores from October 2018, this liqueur is infused with hints of ginger, cinnamon, vanilla and orange. Aldi also released 10 brand new gins mid-2018.
Two startup drink brands — Cooper King Distillery and Artemis Cold Brew collaborated to create the world’s first coffee liqueur named Erebus Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur. Launched in October 2018, this low-sugar drink is a combination of cold brew coffee with a vacuum-distilled coffee spirit.
The winning liqueur of the Gabriel Boudier Wizard 2018 was launched globally in August 2018. Named Gabriel Boudier Mustard Liqueur, the winner, Maria Vieria from East London Liquor Company formulated it with a combination of mustard seeds — infused in alcohol for two weeks.
Spirits/Whisky
In October 2018, Diageo increased the conversion rate of online whisky shoppers by almost one-fifth (18%) after teaming up with supermarket chain Asda, to overhaul the UK supermarket’s e-commerce pages, ensuring consumers stay on Diageo's pages longer than they do on pages for other spirit brands.
Wales' Aber Falls distillery has created a gin expression at the top of its highest peak, Mount Snowdon, to support the Wales Air Ambulance. The distillery partnered with Snowdon Mountain Railway to create the spirit, and used several mountain botanicals during its production.
In October 2018, gin brand Bombay Sapphire unveiled an edible paint which can be used to change the flavour and colour of gin and tonic. Currently only available in five London-based bars, the company plans to release it across the UK in coming months.
In October 2018, French rum brand Depaz debuted in the UK market with the launch of four speciality Agricole rums. All four of the 700ml rums are described as smooth, flavoured, balanced spirits with different styles and finishes to suit different tastes.
In October 2018, Jack Daniel’s launched a limited-edition whiskey under its Single Barrel Collection range to celebrate the art of barrel-making. Called Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Heritage Barrel, the spirit has warm notes of vanilla and sweet baking spices with a lingering oak finish.
In October 2018, US-based Limestone Branch launched two of its rye whiskeys in the UK on-trade. Called Yellowstone Select Bourbon and Minor Case Rye Whiskey, both expressions are hand-bottled and hand-labelled, with a single barrel produced per day.
In October 2018, UK distillery Steampunk launched Voodoo Spiced Rum, inspired by the secret recipe of a Haitian voodoo priestess — who had taken the founder’s brother hostage in 1900. It is made with blends of Caribbean rums, including ingredients like vanilla, ginger, and black pepper.
In October 2018, UK drinks company Quintessential Brands’ introduced limited-edition Bloom Lemon and Elderflower gin that was inspired by the wedding cake of British royal Prince Harry. Launched under Bloom London Dry Gin range, the liqueur stands at 25% ABV and has very low sugar content.
