We (Cambodia) do not agree or support the construction of the Laos dam. While dams can provide some benefits, we believe that the negatives heavily outweigh the positives from an ecological, economic, and humanitarian viewpoint.
economic - negative impacts on trade/economy
hydroelectricity - dams do provide poewr/electricity
river dweller - bad control of water, negative effects (fishing)
environment - ecological +
Conclusion + summary
To conclude, we do not support the construction of the Laos dam, even though the electricity and infrastructure it provides are beneficial, the negative short and long-term environmental effects, the destructive effects on the lifestyle of river dwellers, the negative impacts on trade and Cambodia's economic standing highly outweigh the small amounts of benefits that the Laos dam creates.
