Odyssey Books 21-24 Chase
Book 21:
Plot: Penelope holds the contest and the suitors have to shoot an arrow between 12 axes. Telemachus does not do this because his father tells him not to. None of the suitors can do this. They decide to redo the contest later. Odysseus reveals himself to Eumaeus and Philoetius and lets them in on his plan and asks for their help. They agree. Odysseus then asks if he can have a turn. He easily makes it through all 12 arrows on his first try. Odysseus reveals himself and him and his son draw their swords.

Phemius: Poet who unwillingly became a suitor
Medon: Odysseus's messenger who unwillingly became a suitor

Plot: Odysseus tells Apollo a prayer and shoots an arrow through Antinous throat and the suitors ask if the can spare them and they can repay them. He tells them no and says that it is the will of the gods to murder them. Athena appears as Mentor and helps protect them throughout the murder.

Plot: The battle is over. The maids and suitors are all dead. Odysseus goes to Penelope. Penelope gives him a test. She tells the maid to move the bed into a different room. Odysseus is angry and tells her that he carves it from an olive tree and it cannot be moved. She now believes him and is happy that her husband is home. Odysseus remembers that he will have to drop an oar inland to make Poseidon happy.

Plot: Hermes brings all of the souls of the suitors to the land of the dead where they meet Achiles and Agamemnon. They explain how they are all dead. Odysseus goes to meet Laertes, his father, and Telemachus makes them a meal. The suitors family show up to take revenge, but, Athena shows up and protects them.
