SCRUBBING, GOWNING, GLOVING
Alcohol-based surgical hand scrub product should be applied to dry hands only and should not be used combined sequentially with a surgical hand scrub
A broad spectrum, non-irritating antimicrobial agent should be used for surgical scrub
Surgical gowns and two pairs of gloves should be worn to protect patients and themselves from the transmission of microorganisms

Is required of all members of the surgical team (surgeon, assistant and scrub nurse)
NURSING ROLES
Scrub nurse
Completes surgical hand and arm scrub, and gowns and gloves self

Maintains an adequate count of sponges, needles and instruments and other medical devices that could be retained in the patient (with guidance and checks from circulating nurse)

Reports medications used by surgeon and/or anesthetist including adrenaline solutions and local anesthetics
Circulating nurse

Participates in application of monitoring devices and ensures patient safety in transfering and positioning patient

Participates in time-out, infection control procedures and documentation of intraoperative cares.
Identifies and admits the patient, assessing physical and emotional status.
Prepares, records, labels and sends blood, pathology and any anatomical specimens to proper locations

Coordinates all intraoperative activities with team members and iter health related staff and departments
Maintains aseptic technique in all required activities, monitoring actions of self and others

Assists in preparing room, ensuring that supplies and equipment are available, in working order and sterile (if required).
