Properties
-
Transition Metals
high melting points, high density, strong, hard
-
coloured, and have colourful compounds
-
-
-
(copper does not react with water, iron rusts slowly)
-
The halogens (group 7)
-
Low melting and boiling points, increase going down the group
-
-
-
-
7 valence electrons, react with metals to form 1- ions in ionic compounds
-
*Reactivity trends
Size of the atom: The larger the size, the further away valence electrons are from the nucleus (good for losing electrons, bad for gaining)
Shielding effect of the inner electrons: The more shells there are, the more the outer shell is shielded from the nucleus (good for losing electrons, bad for gaining)
Nuclear charge: nuclear charge helps atoms gain electrons. However, it is outweighed by the other two factors, so the trend is still present (larger atoms have more nuclear charge)
ok so basically i'm monky larger atoms have an easier time losing and a harder time gaining electrons
