Central Nervous System
Cerebrum
Frontal Lobe
Planning, Thinking, decision making, memory, plan, initiate & produce voluntary movement
Parietal Lobe
Process sensory stimuli- conscious of general somatic sensations
-awareness of objects, sounds, & body parts
Temporal Lobe
Primary auditory, olfactory, recognize objects, words, faces-language comprehension emotional response and memory
-
-
-
Postcentral Gyrus
primary somatic sensory cortex - receiving touch, pain, vibration, skin, muscle, joints
-
Wernicke areas
Speech comprehension, able to name viewed objects; left hemishpehere
-
-
-
Diencephalon
Thalamus
Composed of several nuclei, all conscious sensory signals -> thalamus on the way to cortex *except olfaction
signals may be amplified or "toned down"
Hypothalamus
Composed of several nuclei, visceral control center
Function: control of autonomic nervous system w/ help of gray matter in brain stem
Regulates body temperature
Regulates hunger and thirst
Regulation of sleep/ wake cycle w/ help of pineal gland
Control of endocrine system through control of pituitary gland
Involved with emotion
Control of motivational behavior> food and sex
Involved with formation of memory
Epithalamus
A nucleus, pineal grand secretes melatonin
Brain Stem
Pons
Pyramid tract, middle cerebellar peduncle, reticular formation nuclei; involved with autonomic behavior
-
Medulla Oblongata
-
Reticular formation of nuclei: cardiovascualr center, vasomotor center (BP), Respiratory center
-
Cerebellum
-
-
-
Functions
Equilibrium, posture, w/ other parts of brain- smooth & coordinate body movement
Spinal Cord
conus medularis
End of spinal cord, Tapered, L1 or L2
-
filum terminale
(connect to coccyx) connects tissue, stabilize spinal cord
-
-
CNS Protection
Dura Mater
Most Superficial, tough, dense fibrous CT
-
-
-
Pia Mater
very thin, very vascular layer; directly on cortex and has capillaries
-
Dural Venous Sinus
Blood filled space, runs along longitudinal fissure, oxygen poor blood
-
