Henry VIII was a devout Catholic, but wanted to get an annulment because of his wife, Catherine of Aragon's lack of ability to grant him with a heir.

Queen Elizabeth I was a Protestant ruler of England, but did not discriminate against other religions; therefore, Catholics were allowed the practice their religion freely.
Queen Elizabeth I was known to be a great leader, but when she rejected King Philip II of Spain the rest of Europe was very offended. At this point, many wanted to over throw Queen Elizabeth II, and once she heard this she placed Mary Queen of Scotts on house arrest and then killed her.
Issues with the Church
Priests and monks were poorly educated, many being illiterate. Also leaders were corrupt.
This is Pope Leo X. Pope Leo X started selling indulgences which are basically a free ticket into heaven that is received in exchange for money. Indulgences could be purchased for anyone including someone who may have already passed away.
Martin Luther
In 1517 Martin Luther makes a bold statement by addressing his issues with the selling of indulgences which went against the Catholic Church.
Luther eventually travels to Rome and wanted full reform of the church. Luther was called by the Diet of Worms to recant what he had said about the Catholic Church, but Luther stuck to his word and refused to recant.

Although there were many people that were against what Luther was saying, his followers included German royalty and Christians who did not belong to the Catholic Church.

Politics
The Holy Roman Empire consisted of the Pope and the Holy Roman Empire whom of which worked together.
In the early 1500's people criticized the Catholic church's practice and Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. These were both main reasons why the reformation occurred.
The Council of Trent was a group of people who were granted supreme authority of the church. The council was held in Northern-Italy and helped to reform the Catholic Church.
