First Opium War
In 1839 the Chinese Daoguang Emperor and the governor of Canton decided to seize about 20,000 chests filled with British Opium. The British were outraged by this and the British traders immediately asked the government for help
The British tradesmen rioted in Kawloon killing someone and the British government basically said if you come to our country you can't break our laws or you will be tried for it but if our citizens come to your country we will refuse to put them on trial for what they did .
Under the Qing Dynasty their officials stated that China was to no longer trade with Britain at all and put a ban on it .

In October 1839, the British put a blockade on canton. They didn't let any foreign ships in or out. When the Chinese defended themselves the British sank several Chinese ships.
After the British won The First Opium War they forced the Chinese to sign the Treaty of Nanjing which gained the nickname of "the unfair treaty" do to the unfair terms for the Chinese that only benefited the British, US, and France.
