What Equity Offers
Equity offers the chance to become part of a community that can help you voice your objections. They work and fight to secure their members have:
- Equal/Proportional pay
- Better Health and Safety
- Wider range of opportunities
Equity believes that they should help their members regardless of their ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability or class. They strive not to discriminate against any single group or person and to always help.
Equity can also provide support and help to starting musicians as to things they may want to do to help them succeed.
How to join
Equity is a community that is comprised primarily of people who are associated with the performing arts. This may be people such as musicians, actors, dancers and others. To join you must complete their application form and submit an entrance fee. They will also require you to have evidence of having done one of the following:
- Been in a paying job
- Completed work abroad
- You have graduated from a performing arts school
- You are currently in training to become a performer of arts in a further study class
History
Equity was first formed in 1930 by a group of west end performers. They originally built equity to fight for better terms in their work. This then grew into an organisation of over 43,000 members.
BECTU
What BECTU Offers
BECTU will support their members through offering of advice and support. They provide legal support and insurance as well as a multitude of schemes designed to help you be flexible with your work at a fair and just terms and conditions.
History
BECTU was formed in 1991, it focused on helping people involved in the music industry with their jobs.
How to join
BECTU will accept you so long as you are currently in practice for your job. They will ask you to complete an application form, which if accepted will require you to pay a fee of 120 pound annually, which will transition to 1% of your gross annual income thereafter.

What the MU Offers
The musicians Union supports musicians in the way of providing insurance and advice as to how to operate. They will cover you for personal and instrumental liability and help in legal situations.
History
The MU was originally founded in 1893 under the name of the 'Amalgamated Musicians Union'. They have continued to grow through political and social work to grow into a community of over 30,000 musicians.
How to join
You can register to this union online, they offer their services for a price of 215 pound annually. You will have to provide evidence that you are a working musicians as well as fill in their application form.
