CLASSICAL LEADERSHIP STYLES
Autocratic Style Leadership
Individual control overall decisions and have little input from group members
Autocratic leaders make choices based on their own ideas and judgements and rarely accept advice from followers.
Autocratic leadership = a form of dictatorship
Characteristics:
Little or no input from group members
Leaders make all the decisions
Group members are rarely trusted with decision making or important tasks
Work tends to be highly structured and very strict
Group members are micromanaged and supervised all the time
Creativity and innovative ideas tend to be discouraged
Rules are important and usually are clearly outlined and enforced
Laissez-Faire Style Leadership
Leaders are lenient and hands-off and allow group members to make almost al decisions.
The least effective leadership style as it creates the lowest productivity among group members.
Characteristics:
Very little help and directions from leaders
Group members have complete freedom in decision making and tasks
Leaders only provide tools and resources needed to perform tasks
Group members are expected to solve problems and figure out everything by themselves.
Group members have all the power but leaders still take responsibility for group decisions and actions.
The other end of the spectrum, the complete opposite of autocratic style leadership.
Democratic Style Leadership
The middle ground between autocratic style leader ship and Laissez-Faire style leadership.
A combination of both contributions from leaders and group members.
Leaders offer guidance and control but this style of leadership focuses a lot on equality of all members and the flow of ideas and creativity.
Found to be the most effective leadership style as it produces high rates of productivity, better contributions from group members, and increased group morale.
Characteristics:
Sharing of ideas and opinions is encouraged although leaders have the final say over decisions.
Creativity and out of the box thinking is encouraged and rewarded.
