Why did the American Dream change?
Media. Media has exposed newer generations to the world of fame and money. Instead of growing up and admiring their parents or the hardworking people around them, they grew up admiring youtubers and people in magazines.

Shift in values. Now a days people don't value hard work as much as they used to. Now all that matters is power and money.
In a list of American values the 3rd section titled "Materialism" states we value "a “right” to be well off and physically comfortable" and that we value our right to "judge people by their possessions"
