Tropical cyclones
Misc.
-
Tropical cyclones are more likely to happen:
Jun. - Nov. for northern tropics
Nov. - Apr. for southern tropics
Its movement is dependent on prevailing winds and ocean current. Its track is influenced by how far it travels over the ocean. The further it travels the more moisture it collects, increasing its strength
-
-
Formation
Require a source of warm, moist air and ocean temperatures of at least 27°C
Rising warm air causes thunderstorms which group together, making a strong flow
-
Storms rotate and accelerate, forming the cyclone
A rotation force created by the Coriolis effect form part of the global circulation of the atmosphere. It happens in the tropics, where cyclones form. The rotation is due to deflection of winds moving north and south of the Equator
Hazards
Storm surges: large mass of water hits land, damaging beaches and coastal habitats
High winds: up to 240km/h can uproot trees and buildings, and can even injure people
