Chemical Compounds in Cells
Elements and Compounds
An element can't be broken down any further
A compound is two elements chemically combined
If something contains carbon it is an organic compound
If it doesn't it's inorganic
Carbohydrates
A carbohydrate is a combo of hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen
Rich in energy
Starches and sugar
Proteins
Protein is made of amino acids
There are thousands of different proteins
There are 20 amino acids and combos of them make different proteins
Protein males up a lot of the cell structure
Enzymes speed up chemical processes
Nucleic Acids
They contain the instructions for the functions of life
Two types of nucleic acids
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid)- Genetic material that has organism information passed from parent to offspring
RNA (Ribonucleic Acid)- Found in the cytoplasm and the nucleus and helps in the creation of proteins
Water and Living Things
Water makes up 90 percent of the human body
Without water most chemical reactions couldn't happen
Water also helps cells stay stable
Lipids
Lipids are like carbohydrates
They contain a lot of energy
Lipids include fats and oils
