Chemical compounds in cells
Carbohydrates
Energy rich compounds. Sugars and starches are examples of CH. Many foods that come from plants contain starch.
Elements and compounds
Elements
An element is any substance that can not be broken down into simpler substances. An element is made up with only one type of atom.
Organic and inorganic compounds
important things in living things are Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids.
compounds
when two or more elements combine they become a compound. Most elements in living things occur in the form of compounds.
Lipids
Fats, oils, and waxes are all lipids. They are energy rich compounds. Lipids contain more energy than carbs. During winter bears mostly eat carbs.
Proteins
structure of proteins
the molecules are made up of smaller molecules called amino acids. There are 20 types of amino acids. They can make countless proteins just like the alphebet.
function of proteins
Proteins make up lots of organelles in cells. An enzyme is a type of proteins. Without this proteins many chemical reactions would not be possible.
Nucleic acids
They are made up of oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and phosphorus
RNA plays an important role in the production of proteins. They are found in the nucleus as well as the cytoplasm.
water and living things
Most chemical reactions within cells could not take place without water. Two thirds of your body is made of water.
