Disease process
The incubation period for chlamydia is quite variable and may range from days to months after the initial exposure. The average time from exposure to the development of symptoms is usually about one to three weeks after sexual contact with an infected person.
Approximately 3,000,000 women and men become infected every year.
Transmition
Vaginal, anal, and oral sex.
From mother to baby via eyes during delivery
= pneumonia eye infection
Signs and symptoms
Females
yellow, mucopurulent endocervical
discharge, dysuria, pelvic pain, mild
abdominal pain, spotting, cervicitis, salpingitis
(inflammation of the fallopian tubes), PID,
Males
Urethritis, mucoid gray or clear discharge,
dysuria, proctitis, epididymitis,
MAY BE ASYMPTOMATIC
Treatment
PO erythromycin BID for 7 days
Single dose of azythromycin
ALL PARTNERS NEED TO BE
EVALUATED, TESTED + TX'd
Must abstain from sex until
both parties have completed ABO
Diagnostics:
Urine sample (nucleic acid-amplified test)
Urethral/ cervical swab and culture
All pregnant women are screened
Risks
Multiple sex partners
Drug/alcohol use
Avoidance of condom use
Frequent sex
Failure to seek medical treatment
Age 15-24
Hx of STD
NDX:
Anxiety r/t presence of STI
Education
Acute pain r/t
genital irritation
Meds, ABO, and
appropriate clothing choices
Knowledge deficit r/t cause,
transmission, tx, and prevention
