3 Major Types
Fluid Connective Tissues distinctive population of cells suspended in a matrix of watery ground substance containing dissolved proteins. Two fluid connective tissues are blood and lymph
Supporting Connective Tissue: less diverse cells population than proper connective and a matrix of dense of ground substance and closely packed fibers. Bones contains two supporting connective tissues: cartilage and bone
Proper Connective Tissue: many types of cells and fibers within a matrix containing a syrup ground substance. Example: tissue that underlies the skin, fatty tissue, and tendons and ligaments
Functions
Transportation of materials Fluid connective tissues provide an efficient means of moving dissolved materials from one region of the body to another
Storage of energy reserves Fats are stored in connective tissue cells called adipose cells until needed
Support and Protection: minerals and fibers produced by connective tissue cells establish a bony structural framework for the body, protects delicate organs, and surround and interconnect other tissue types
Defense of the body Specialized connective tissue cells respond to invasions by microorganisms through cell-to-cell interaction and the production of antibodies

Dense CT, Dense Regular
Description: primarily parallel collagen
Function: Attaches muscles to bone
Location: Tendons, most ligaments
Loose CT, Reticular
Description: reticulated fibers in base ground substance
Function: supports white blood cells
Location: Lymphoid organs (spleen)
Dense Ct, Dense Irregular
Description: primary irregularly arranged
Function: provides strength
Location: around muscles or organs dermis

D: matrix same to but less than in hyaline cartilage; thick collagen fibers
Location: pubic joints, intervertbal discs (spine)

Description: similar to hyaline but more elastic fibers in matrix
Function: maintenance the shape of a structure while allowing great flexibility
Location: supports the external ear

Description: Amorphous but firm matrix; collagen fibers
Function: provides flexibility and support
Location: ends of ribs and nose
