Styles:
Analytical: emphasizes attending to the full message before coming to judgement. View multiple perspectives. Think systematically about complex issues
Relational: Building emotional closeness with other. responsive to others emotions, strive to be nonjudgemental, supportive rather than evaluating.
Critical: strong desire to evaluate the message. focus on accuracy and consistency. can frustrate others by appearing to find fault with minor details
Task- Oriented: concerned with efficiency. listeners require organized and concise language
Ex: Rowers listening to coxswain calls for direction in a boat.

Active mind can lead to daydreaming, planning a rebuttal, personal interests. Instead should focus on understanding the speaker's ideas better
Information overload:
Face multitude of information daily which can lead to mindless thought rather than mindful. --> can be positive if info. is unimportant Ex) media, internet, advertisement

Men and Women express support differently, but appreciate the same kind of social support.
Women: more apt at composing and processing messages Men: offer advice/ divert topic. However both M and W respond positively to highly personal messages, delivered with NV immediacy (touch, eye contact)
