Humanity and Technology
Mental Illness
In recent years, cases of depression and anxiety are flooding in at numbers we have never seen before. It seems as though the rise of the technological age and the internet is having drastically negative effects on our well being. The dopamine emitted by our brain when we receive likes, text messages, and emails have made us slaves to our devices.
Not only are we becoming more incapable to cope with our lives, but we aren't receiving the right care either. Rather than being taught techniques to empower ourselves, we are being fed pharmaceuticals that do nothing but dull our experience. A large number of people find that they are constantly upping their dosage in order to feel better, and some don't even feel the effects of this medication at all.
Most of us would agree that a good sense of well being and happiness is the foundation for a fulfilling life, so why are we so worried about the next cell phone release and not our own health?

Processed Food
-
While performing my routine grocery shopping I noticed something very interesting. Unhealthy food is vastly cheaper and more accessible than good quality whole food. You even need to go to a special store or pay a premium for food that has not been genetically modified or sprayed with dangerous pesticides.
In the United States it is cheaper to buy a nutrient deprived meal from Mcdonalds than it is to buy almost any other food. We've become so good at making cheap and empty calories that it is actually less expensive than what we grow in the ground.
I'm sure many of our ancestors would have marveled at the ease at which nourishment can be had these days, however we are not using our technology to help ourselves. Rather than finding the most nutritious and beneficial things to eat, we are instead intoxicated with food for our own comfort. We see the immediate reward rather than the long term damage we are causing, and in turn have created an industry of toxic food.
Obesity and Diabetes rates are on the rise, and if we don't make a change soon we may start seeing our age expectancy shift in the opposite direction.

The Animals
-
With the destruction of the rain forests and the pollution of our oceans, our progression is wreaking havoc on our environment and the animals that inhabit it. If we don't pause the destruction soon, we may be on the list of endangered species as well.
Relationships
While the internet has united us all in one way, it has also disconnected us in another. Virtual interactions are becoming more common than ever, and as a result our younger generation is becoming more detached from one another. Awkwardness and social anxiety are becoming the norm for young people. Are we sacrificing our real human bonds for text on a screen?

Future
We are on the edge a breakthrough in Artificial Intelligence. Soon enough the machines we have created will have a mind of their own just as any human does, and with that comes complications. If we do not take the right precautions we could be fighting not a war against ourselves, but a war on our own technology.
With technology becoming more and more inexpensive, privacy is becoming a thing of the past. Information is valuable to big business and soon every waking moment of your life will be recorded in some form. Are we going too far?
