Cerebrum

Lobes

Frontal Lobe - think, plans, & decision making

Parietal Lobe - Receives sensory information

Temporal Lobe - Emotional response, memory, recognition of objects, auditory and olfactory cortex

Occipital - location of the visual cortex

Insula (hidden lobe) - gustation cortex, general visceral sensation

Gyri

Postcentral Gyrus - receiving sensory information - primary somatosensory cortex

Precentral gyrus - (located anterior of the central sulcus) - primary motor cortex, control of voluntary movement

Broca - left hemisphere of brain controls motor movement of speech

Wernickle - allows us to understand speech

White matter Tracts

Association tract - (shortest) - connects parts of same hemisphere

Commissural - take us from one sphere to another

Projection - (longest) - send sensory info through out the body (descending motor signals)

Diencephalon

Thalamus - all sensory info that goes to the cortex heads through the thalamus

Hypothalamus - main visceral control center - formation of memory

epithalamus - has pineal gland - prepares us for sleep

Brain Stem

Midbrain - motor movement, particularly movements of the eye

Pons - involved with automatic behaviors

Medulla Oblongata - involved with autonomic behavior

cerebellum - maintain posture & equilibrium

Cerebellar Peduncles

Superior - (efferent) connects midbrain to cerebellum

Middle - (efferent) - connects pons to cerebellum

Inferior - (afferent) connects medulla oblongata to cerebellum

Spinal Cord

Conus Medullaris - (very end - tapers to a point)

Cuada Equina - (latin for horse tail)

Filum Terminale - Fibrous connective tissue

Anterior roots - carries motor

Posterior roots - carries sensory

Posterior root Ganglion - group of neurons

CNS protection

Menings

Dura Mater - (tough mother), tough, dense fibrous C.T

Pia Mater - Fibrous C.T - surface layer of ceribrum

Arachnoid Mater - (spider mother) - in between the dura and pia mater

Subarachnoid - space filled with C.S.F also blood vessals

Epidural Space - filled with fat/ adipose

Dural Sinus - primarily along the fissures/ but also deeper
