Central Nervous System
Cerebrum
-
-
Temporal Lobe
Recognizes objects, words, and faces; language comprehension, emotional response, and memory as well.
-
-
-
Broca Area
Located in left cerebral hemisphere, controls motor movements of speech
Wernicke Area
located in the left hemisphere next to the temporal lobe and the parietal lobe, helps with comprehension of speech
Tracts
-
-
Projection
Goes a great distance in the CNS; Afferent stimulus is accending, and Efferent Stimulus is decending
Diecephalon
Thalamus
Composed of several nuclei; All sensorysignals go through here except olfaction; signals maybe amplified or toned down here.
Hypothalamus
composed of several nuclei; seems to regulate body functions, i.e.temperature,hunger or thirst, etc. also controls sexual drives. It can form memories as well.
Epithalamus
Location of pineal gland, helps with the sleep cycle
Brain Stem
-
Pons
pyramidal tracts run through the pons, reticular formation nuclei are in here, they are associated with automatic behaviors
Medulla oblongata
Most inferior part of the brain, cadriovascular, resporatory, and vasomotor centers are located here.the medial tracts are called pyramids
Cerebellum
smooths and coordinates body movements, helps with equillibrium and posture, and motor movements
peduncles
superior
is efferent, white matter connecting midbrain to cerebellum; coordinates smooth muscle movements with cerebrum
Middle
Efferent,Connects pons to cerebellum
Inferior
Afferent, connects cerebellum to rest of body, helps with equallibrium and proprioceptors
Spinal Cord
-
Cauda equina
Looks like horse tail, is below and connected to the Conus Medullaris
-
Roots
Anterior Root
Efferent, allows signals to travel away from the spinal cord. Axons of visceral and somatic neurons
