Method to Improve Wear Resistance
Electroless Nickel Plating
Involves deposition of Ni-P composite in a chemical bath
Advantages :
:check: excellent uniformity and throwing power of coating
:check: high hardness
:check: natural lubricity
:check: abrasion and wear resistance
Disadvantages:
:red_cross:contaminants may fail to initiate plating in localized areas, hence clean surface is required
:red_cross: cause rapid corrosion of the substrate if coating contains pores
:red_cross: health and environment concern due to Nickel compound
Effective type of chemical plating on Aluminium and Titanium
Nitriding
Methods
Salt Baths
Nitrogen donating medium : cyanide salt
Advantages :
:check: higher diffusion rate
:check:Quick processing time
Disadvantages: :no_entry: Salts used are highly toxic
Gas Nitriding
Ammonia(nitrogen donor) dissociates into nitrogen and hydrogen when contact with heated work piece
Nitrogen then diffuses onto the material's surface creating nitride layer
Advantages :
:check:Low equipment cost
:check:Nitriding results can be closely controlled
Disadvantages:
:red_cross:Presence of contaminants will deliver poor results
:red_cross: Ammonia used as nitriding medium (Toxic)
Plasma Nitriding
Electric fields used to generate ionized molecules of the gas to be nitrided.
Gas used : Nitrogen
Advantages:
:check: Effectively removes oxide layer from surface that could remain
:check: Process is thermally stable
Provides a hard protective layer,it is grown thermochemically by introducing nitrogen to the outer surface.
