Endocrine System
-
Endocrine Organs
Anterior Pituitary
-
-
-
-
Growth Hormone- stimulates the release of IGFs from the liver, which synergistically act on all body tissues, especially cartilage, bone, muscle, and adipose connective tissue to stimulate growth
-
Posterior Pituitary
Oxytocin
females:stimulates smooth muscle in uterus to contract, ejection of milk from breasts
males: cause a desire to cuddle and bond with mate
ADH
Stimulates reabsorption of water from tubular fluid in kidneys; stimulates vasoconstriction in arterioles of body, thereby raising blood pressure
Thyroid Gland
Thyroid Hormone- most body cells;
Increases metabolism, oxygen use, growth, and energy use; supports and increases rate of development
Calcitonin- bone, kidney; Reduces calcium levels in body fluids; decreases bone resorption by osteoclasts and increases calcium loss through kidneys
Parathyroid Glands
PTH- bone, small intestine, kidney; Increases calcium levels in blood through bone resorption; increases calcium absorption by small intestine by calcitriol; decreases calcium loss through the kidneys
Adrenal Cortex
Gonadocorticoids- sex organs; protein synthesis in sex organ cells; androgens(male sex hormones); in females some androgens are converted into estrogen
-
-
Adrenal Medulla
Epinephrine and Norepinephrine: various cells throughout the body; work with the sympathetic division of the ANS to stimulate fight-or-flight response
