Special Education Referral Process
Is there a discrepancy in the student’s academic, social/emotional, behavioral, and/or physical ability and his or her age that may signal the need for additional academic or behavioral support?
YES
Pre-referral
Identify, develop, and implement alternative education strategies for the student.
Did these alternative strategies help alleviate the issue?
YES
No need for further assistance
NO
Contact Parents or Guardians and gain more information about the student
Refer student to administrators to be formally tested with parent or guardian permission
If the student is found to have special needs then you will need to get an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) from a qualified professional for the student and you will need to implement that specialized plan in your classroom
If parents refuse to cooperate then you will need to get the school administrators involved

Behavioral issues in the classroom can be anything from violence and outbursts to apathy and inattentiveness.
List the behavioral issues and possible triggers and keep notes on specific instances
Develop a strategy based on the behavioral issue.
