• Indeterminate - "indefinite", create min & max range of years to serve, parole board discretion for release, and tied to rehabilitation
• Determinate : specific period, incorporates "good times" or "credit time", release mandatory
• Mandatory : required min period of incarceration, limits judicial discretion, truth in sentencing
