Inspector Calls
Sheila character change
"Mummy! I'm sorry I really was listening!"- Sheila to her mother. EXPLAINATION: keen to behave well, expectations on her to marry rich and wealthy Gerald, 'hid' behind parents protection, niavity, quick to apologise, easily led and childish.
"So, nothings really happened! So theres nothing to be sorry for, nothing to learn. We can all go back to behaving the way we did?" Sheila to parents. EXPLAINATION: stands up for herself, gains her own morals, more confedient in an assured manner, she knows her actions may jeopardise her family's financially promising future by canning her engagement to Gerald.
"I don't dislike you as I did an hour ago Gerald. In fact, in some way I rather respect you more than I did before...but this has made a difference"- {Sheila Birling}
"Whoever that Inspector was, you've begun to learn something. And now you've stopped, you're ready to go back to your same old ways."- {Sheila to Birling parents}
-
"Now Sheila I'm not defending him, but you must understand that a lot of young men......Dont interfere father! Gerald knows what i mean and apparently you dont." EXPLAINATION: reaction from her family, family is traditional and isnt willing to accept responsibilty and become affected by the events, Sheila is appauled that her family thinks they have not done anything wrong simply because they think the girl is not dead
"You're beggining to pretend as if nothing's really happened at all!"- {Sheila}. "I tell you, whoever that Inspector was, it was anything but a joke"
RELATE TO NZ: womens suffrage....Eva- current pay gap in NZ, 2018 = gender pay gap 9.2%. Although some stereotypes are appearing to be broken (e.g. Jacinda Ardern), there is still lack of women representatino to stand up for womens rights and in leadership roles- more male CEO'S called John than women
-
Social class
"The same strong will that made her stand out as a good worker, eventually gave her the sack."- {Mr Birling} EXPLAINATION: Eva is representative of all women during her time in history. Name is like EVE which is the first name in the bible, surname is the most common surname in England. She is symbolic of all ordinary, working class women- invisible, powerless and without a voice
"If you don't come down on these people, they'll soon be asking for the earth"- {Mr Birling} EXPLAINATION; people whose lives are constantly being shut down and ignored by people of higher class will constantly be in a cycle of poverty and remain in their same pre-dispositioned social classes. In the UK, there is a CEO who says, "I was brought up to give the same respect to the Janitor as I am to any person in a business suit."
-
"She was claiming elaborate fine feelings and scruples, ones that were simply absurd for someone in her position"- {Mrs Birling}
RELATE: 27% of children in NZ are currently living in poverty, 1 in 4 children live in material hardship. Evident in today's society- people born into socially disadvantaged lives= less opportunities, faciliies, treatment, respect or services compared to those living in higher socioeconomic positions.....e.g. living without a home means people cannot register for IRD or have placement in economic system...."A child is 2 and a half times more likely to have a managerial job, if parents are of higher class"- {Gregory Clark}

Responsibilty
Eric- young, immature, drinking, squiffy, forces himself on a girl and she gets pregnant and doesn’t accept responsibility…walks away
Sheila- young, immature at the start, getting engaged to a rich wealthy man, she’s done something to Eva Smith and that is irresponsible, personal individual responsibility to take her position and her power and ensure she treats everyone she comes into contact with fairly. USE QUOTES FROM SHEILA PARAGRAPH
Mr Birling- he is responsible for his workers, could pay them 25 shillings, doesn’t and pays them 22,
RELATE TO NZ: Social responsibility is a current theme in companies and society today to promote businesses— corporate social responsibility…..profits vs what we can do to respect employees— people will buy products because its ‘green’ or low environment impact, good source and sustainable income in fair trade countries
Historical context
"I am talking as a hard-headed practical man of business and I assure you that there is no chance of war. The world is developing so fast that it will make war simly impossible."- {Mr Birling}.....EXPLAINATION: so confedient, aggnorance is made very clear, 2 years later Titanic sunk, audience looses trust in him as a character
"She sails next week. Unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable"- {Mr Birling} EXPLAINATION: extended metaphor for the events that will take place in the Birling family, so confedience in his social class, indenial of dissaster in any form, dramatic irony- ironic that the titanic sinks just like their family does, metaphor for what is about to happen to their family
