JoannaSassineNervousSystem
Cerebrum
Consists of two hemispheres, Left and right, which are separated by the longitudinal fissure.Responsible for all neural functions (voluntary and involuntary)
Frontal Lobe
Anterior portion of the brain. Includes areas responsible for human personality and development, speech, voluntary movement
Broca's Area
Responsible for the production of words and speech
Pre-central Gyrus
Found in the posterior portion of the frontal lobe. Location of the primary motor cortex.
Parietal Lobe
Top portion of the brain. Includes areas responsible for processing sensory information, language, and location
Post-central Gyrus
Anterior portion of the parietal lobe. Location of the primary somatosensory cortex
Temporal Lobe
Both sides of the brain. Includes areas responsible for processing and understanding speech
Wernicke's Area
Connected to the Broca's area. Responsible for the processing of language
Occipital Lobe
Posterior portion of the brain. Primarily responsible for vision
Diecephalon
Links the Nervous system with the Endocrine system
Thalamus
Involved in sensory and motor signal. Also responsible for the regulation of sleep
Hypothalamus
Controls body temperature, hunger, thirst, homeostasis, and emotions.
Epithalamus
location of the Pineal Gland.
Secretion of Melatonin,
Brainstem
Controls messages between the brain and the body
Midbrain
Motor movement, especially eye movement
Pons
Controls breathing and processes sensations such as hearing and taste
Medulla Oblongata
Lowest portion of the brainstem. Control center for the heart and lungs
Cerebellum
Regulates Muscular Activity
Superior cerebral Peduncle
Transports impulses to the midbrain
Middle Cerebral Peduncle
Transports impulses to the pons
Inferior Cerebral Peduncle
Transports impulses to the Medulla Oblongata
Spinal Cord
Transmission of sensory neurons up to the brain
Conus Medularis
Nerve roots of the spinal cord
Filum Terminale
Longitudinal Support for the spinal cord
Cauda Equina
Sends and receives signals from the pelvis, feet and legs
Posterior Root
Transmit information to the dorsal root
Anterior Root
Transmit information to the ventral root
CNS Protection
Protects the brain and the spinal cord from trauma and damages
Dura Mater
Toughest Membrane surrounding the brain and the spinal cord
Pia Mater
Delicate membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord
Arachnoid Mater
located between the pia mater and dura mater. Contains spider looking fibers that protect the brain and spinal cord
Subarachnoid space
Space between arachnoid mater and pia mater. Contains Cerebral Spinal Fluid
Dural Sinus
The sinuses are filled with blood.
Epidural Space
Space found in the spinal cord only; Filled with Fat
