ALVEOLUS
-
Type I alveolar cells – make up the majority of the alveolar wall – special type of simple squamous epithelium
Type II Alveolar cells- simple cuboidal epithelial cells that are spaced at irregular intervals in the alveolar walls each produces a detergent-like material called surfactant that coats the alveolar surface.Surfactant reduces the surface tension of alveolar fluid to prevent collapse of alveoli during expiration.Type II cells also secrete antimicrobial agents that function in innate immunity
Alveolar macrophages -a population of fixed macrophages that continually move over the alveolar surface to remove debris and pathogens. These cells are why the alveolar surface of healthy individuals is sterile.
