The Learner
CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT Having some choice and ownership in the setting up of the classroom, and ongoing changes. Students are able to discuss how they best learn and how the environment can support their learning.
CHOICE & TRUST. Having a choice about how, where and who they learn with. Being trusted by their teacher to make choices. KEY TAKEAWAY That often the learning comes from something not working. Being allowed to try something new, and then reflect if it helped or hindered in order to make choices next time very powerful for learners.
Having VOICE in the classroom. Discussions around daily decision that impact their learning empowered the students.

Building on from voice and choice, extend to the 'What they Learn'. Creativity Thursday's, Genius Hour, Passion Projects etc give student more ownership over what they learn.
Learning and Teaching
Assessment of prior knowledge. Having it available to the students so they can see how their thinking is developing. KEY TAKEAWAY They called it a time capsule, which I thought was a great idea!
Learning about learning: Spending time at the beginning of the year focusing on how we learn, and supports them when making choices throughout the year.
Assessing WITH students, co-constructing criteria and using feedback to set learning goals involve students in the assessment, rather than assessment being 'done' to them.
SUPPORTING STUDENT INITIATIVES. Both inside and outside the classroom to show that their ideas matter, are valued and can be implemented, no matter the size. KEY TAKEAWAY can help students notice and be aware of their own agency.
The Learning Community
SHARING THEIR LEARNING. Student- led conferences with sharing their voice within their learning, their choices and reflecting upon them as well as sharing learning goals developed.
LEARNING FROM EACH OTHER Working with other students, other teachers, outside groups, parents or community members and identifying resources outside school can enhance learning.
Teacher Transparency. Being open about your own goals, sharing them with students, how others are helping your achieve them and modelling both reflection and change.
TEACHER CAPABILITY: Undertake personal inquiry, reflection and action to inform practice
