Cultural and Religious Resistance To Colonial Rule
Who?
In another example, Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, was a Muslim leader in Senegal who lead his own brotherhood. He would later be exiled multiple times between 1895 and 1907.
In one famous example, the Aba Women's Revolt, this particular revolt consisted of only rural women.
What?
Bamba wanted to maintain a level of self-governing for social and economic affairs. He wanted to protect Islam from what he believed to be the corruptive forces of European rule. He waged war on the European ideas of colonial rule and European culture as opposed to waging war directly on the French.
The Aba Women's Revolt was a revolt to try to protect their economic and political ideas from local colonial rule because they felt threatened by heavy taxes being imposed by the local colonial government.
Where?
The Aba Women's Revolt, or the Igbo Women's war took place in Southeastern Nigeria.
Bamba was a leader in Senegal, which is now in West Africa.
These movements were happening all over Africa. These are just some of the bigger resistances.
When?
Bamba founded the brotherhood in 1883 and continued to gain many followers throughout the 1880's and 90's.
The Aba Women's Revolt took place in 1929. This was the first mass protest that took place in Nigeria prior to 1960.
Movements like these were happening throughout the lat 19th century and 20th century.
Why?
Cultural and Religious resistance usually occurred because many Africans did not agree with European policies, and did not like how they were being taken advantage of by being taxed unfairly
How?
The Igbo women confronted Chief Okugo and protested against the new taxes. The 10,000 women demanded that he resign. They wanted to be better able to govern themselves.
Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba gained a very large following, which included chiefs and followers. He started war on European culture and politics.
