Alliances and Divisions
When
-
1893, 1896: Conflicts about mining in Zimbabwe.
-
-
Who
Europeans and different African Nations: Mashona, Herero, Ndebele (refer to where)
What
They sometimes forms alliances together against a common enemy but in Europe’s case, the sometimes caused division between 2 tribes to make it easier for them to control an area.
The British had known there was a rivalry between the Ndebele and neighboring communities so they started a dispute among them and joined in. Eventually, they conquered Ndebele land using Maxim guns and military strength.
Why
When the Europeans divided the Africans, they gained land, which was good for them.
Because the Africans knew they had very little chance of overcoming the Europeans, they forged alliances. With the new and advanced weapons that the Europeans had, the Africans knew that they could not win by themselves.
Because it was beneficial to those who forged alliances, because they became twice as strong, and were able to appear more threatening to the enemy.
How
The Africans forged alliances with others that had common enemies and goals. They then took advantage of these similarities and used it for their own benefit.
Where
-
Zimbabwe (Ndebele)
British used disputes between the Ndebele and neighboring communities to create a conflict. The British would then intervene and claim control over Ndebele land.
Namibia(Herero)
Hendrik Witbooi and Germany allied against the Herero. Witbooi revolted and joined with the Herero after germans asserted control over the region.
