-
Open learning platforms create many new opportunities: they increase the accessibility of knowledge to less privileged learners, promote collaboration among participants, enable wider reach of the shared content, and promote the organizer as an educator and an expert.
Openness and sharing also require some skills and capabilities such as having a clear online identity, knowledge about how to create videos, analyze data that are presented online etc.
A wide range of methods and materials can be used to enhance open online learning and collaboration of participants, but care must be taken about the licences for the use of online materials (5R).
Next to its opportunities, there are also obstacles and dangers to think about when using OER. Examples are legal and ethical restrictions, concerns about systems and platforms which are necessary to provide access to OER, and individual obstacles such as a lack of required skills or emotional barriers like fear.
The Open Education Resources (OER) provide openly licensed text, media and other digital assets that are useful in education.
There exists a big variety of tools and platforms for open learning. There are differences in the way learning resources are offered: some are freely accessible, like MITOpenCourseware or Khan Academy, some are partially free but require a fee for examination and certificates, like Coursera and EdX.
