Book Twelve- Difficult Choices
Odysseus goes back to Circe's island to bury Elpenor's body.
Circe tells Odysseus about the journey he needs to take to get home. First, he will go by sirens and then a cave where Scylla lives and a lower rock where Charybdis lives.
Odysseus and his crew leave Circe's island and Odysseus tells the crew what he knows about the journey except for Scylla, who may kill some of them.
They reach the Sirens who Odysseus listens to while he is tied up and the crew have wax in their ears.
They go to the rocks and Scylla snatches six men and eats them, they avoid Charybdis who sucks in water and spurts it out.
They reach the island of the sun god where they have to stay because the weather is bad for sailing.
Odysseus goes out alone and while he is gone the crew kill and eat some cattle belonging to the sun god. This enrages the sun god and he makes Zeus punish them.
When they leave Zeus destroys their ship and all the crew dies except for Odysseus. He goes back to the rocks, past them and to Calypso's island.
Book 13- Two Tricksters
Odysseus finishes telling his story and the king says they will give Odysseus more gifts.
They feast more and listen to music, then Odysseus thanks them and they go to the ship to leave.
Odysseus sleeps while they sail. Once the reach the shore, the crew leaves Odysseus on the sand and puts his treasure beside an olive tree, then they leave.
Poseidon is angry, he thinks the gods dishonor him, Zeus says that is not true and that Poseidon can punish as he wants.
Poseidon punishes the Phaeacians for helping travelers. He turns the ship into stone.
King Alcinous says they must sacrifice 12 bulls and stop helping visitors.
During this Athena cast a mist over Ithaca so it is unrecognizable to Odysseus
Odysseus is mad because he thinks the Phaeacians left him there. Then Athena comes to Odysseus as a Shepard and Odysseus makes up a story of who he is.

Book 14- A Loyal Slave
Odysseus goes to his old slave.
The slave, named Eumaeus says his master is gone and he gives Odysseus food.
Slave tells Odysseus, who is disguised, how he has to feed the suitors.
Odysseus makes up a story of who he is and says that Odysseus will come back, he says...
He is from Crete and his mother was a slave, and his father was a wealthy man. When his father died the wealth got divided between him and his brothers, but he got very little. He enjoys sailing and became rich from war. Then he went to Egypt and his crew was rash and started enslaving people but then warriors came and fight them. He got mercy from the king who let him live with him. A man tricked him and tried to sell him. There was a storm from Zeus and he went to Thesprotia where the king helped him and there he heard about Odysseus. the king helped him get home, but the crew tried to enslave him. They stopped at Ithaca to get food and he escaped.
Eumaeus thinks the news of Odysseus is lies, so Odysseus says if he is wrong then they can kill him.
They eat and make sacrifice and Odysseus tells a story of when he was in war Odysseus helps him when he is cold.
Eumaeus sleeps with the pigs and Odysseus sleeps beside the fire.
Characters
Eumaeus is an old slave of Odysseus, he helps Odysseus when he first comes home.
