Bronchioles- air passageways that have a diameter smaller than 1 mm- terminal bronchioles lead to te Respiratory bronchioles, the 1st section of the respiratory zone (only bronchioles w/ alveloli)

External surface of each alveolous is covered with a network of pulmonary capillaries. Respiratory membranes form at the locations where the pulmonary capillaries and alveolar wall contact each other
Each contains 3 layers; type 1 cell of alveolar wall, endothelium of the pulmonary capillary, & the fused basement membranes of these two epithelia
