Legalized Sports Gambling
How it Affects Colorado
I learned that the most important thing to do if the legislation passes in Colorado is to educate and make sure sports keep their integrity
As of right now, our two state senators are devising a proposal to show at the next legislative meeting in January
If you attend or work at a university and the legislation passes, you will be required to be educated on the subject
The new legislation has a potential to threaten sports. To prevent this, everyone at the college campus would need to be informed and smart about how they gamble and what they know (about athletes).
This specifically identifies with people at the University of Colorado
If the legislation does pass the NCAA, CU will participate meaning people will be educated
Supreme Court's Decision Legalizing Sports Gambling
it is ultimately up to the NCAA to decide if college sports are involved in the new legislation, not the state government
This new legislation has the potential to reach and impact tons of people very soon
Depending on which states decide to pass the law, people across the country can participate in sports gambling in any state for the first time since 1992.
This will affect everyone in the country at some point. People will want to know more about the topic because their state has the freedom to allow sports gambling.
Anyone 21+ will be allowed to participate.
Rick George
Athletic Director at the University of Colorado
he doesn't want the new law to pass for college sports. He believes that college athletics should be left out of gambling, and the attention should be on professional level teams
he plays a major role in what will happen to CU's athletic programs if the legislation is passed
He is also very updated on the information and currently attending conferences on the topic.
The information he gave me is priceless and I think everyone will want to hear his opinion on everything, and how he thinks the future will play out
Rick George suggested a tax would be put on the gambling and the funds would go towards higher education
How Could it Effect Student-Athletes
My perspective surrounding the topic is very important because I am a student-athlete myself
Through listening to more and more people who are going to be making decisions on the final legislation, the student-athletes are specifically the point of discussion
I can offer the opinion of a student-athlete to people making the decisions. This is huge because it's not every day that an 18-year-old has an opportunity to influence state legislation.
I plan to give the perspective of a college athlete, and describe how it can affect us either positively or negatively.
you will need to know what is allowed and what isn't when communicating and giving information about student-athletes, even if they're your friends or students
