Redi's Experiment
-
How did he do it
Uncovered Jar
He left a piece of meat in an uncovered jar. After a couple of days Redi saw that there were maggots on the meat.
Covered Jar
He left a piece of meat in a jar that was covered by a cloth that let in air and after a couple of days saw that there was nothing in the jar but the meat. There were no maggot's inside.
Conclusion
He Reasoned that flies had been able to enter the uncovered jar to lay their eggs on the meat but on the covered jar none of the flies could get in so there were no eggs meaning no maggots
Pasteur's Experiment
What was it
Even after Redi's experiment people still believed in spontaneous generation so to prove them wrong Pasteur conducted an experiment using broth
How did he do it
Boiled Broth
In one of his two flasks filled with clear broth where oxegyn was let in but not bacteria from the oxegyn Pasteur boiled it to kill existing bacteria. In a few days the broth remained clear.
Unboiled Broth
In the other flask of broth Pasteur did not boil it and then let it sit for the exact same amount of time as the boiled broth. After a few days the broth had become cloudy showing that new bacteria was growing.
Conclusion
He concluded that because there was living bacteria present the new bacteria grew in the bottle that was not boiled and because the other bottle was boiled to kill existing bacteria no new bacteria grew
