Experiment 2 results
-
The guard was obeyed significantly more than the civilian, replicating experiment 1.
Experiment 3A
-
141 college students, investigated 29 scenarios including original 3 from exp 1.
Results
Of the original 3, the guard was not perceived as legitamate than other uniforms when giving the order.
Suggests that participants did not think the experimenter's uniform made their request any more legitamate.
Experiment 3B
-
Participants were asked to predict what they and people would do in one of the scenarios from Experiment 1
Results
Showed participants didn't think the guard would have more social power in these situations, compared to the milkman or the civilian
Conclusions
Wearing a uniform gives people more power and influence over others' behaviour than people not in uniform.
The higher status the uniform is perceived to have, the more power it provides.
-
Type of uniform have an influence on obedience in a real life setting with the higher the perceived status of the uniform resulting in increased obedience.
