FILM TECHNIQUES
Pathetic fallacy (when the weather reflects the mood of the scene) - The rainy day setting suggests that there is a bleak outlook for the future of these children.
The colour yellow (is used throughout the film as a symbol for hope) - The significance of the rain jacket being yellow suggests that there is hope for Genesis' future.
Lighting (reflects the mood of the scene or the characters) eg: when Mana wakes up next to Genesis at the memorial, the lighting is soft and suggest that there is hope for their future.
The director, James Napier Robinson, used an over-the-shoulder shot so that the audience would see the situation from Genesis' point of view.
The viewer sees Noble's property from Genesis' point of view and although it is well kept, it is clear that Noble does not have a lot of money.
The Eastern Knights club sign is seen above the garage door; it is quite roughly made showing us that the kids in the chess club made it without much attention towards the quality of the sign. However, it also symbolizes the individual characteristics of the kids who created it.
The noise of the kids' chatter comes towards Genesis on the street tells the audience that the kids have a lot of energy and are loud. The director is suggesting that this energy and noise is about to overwhelm Genesis as it comes towards him and up until this point, he has been fairly quiet.
When Mana is being patched and robs the home, the boy who is terrified in the corner and the music that it playing.
