He is threatened by France because of power struggles. Threatened by invasion from Spain. Threatened by 300 german lords and rulers from the Holy Roman Empire. And was threatened by the Catholic Church because they were upset at the power loss and struggle.
This ended religious warfare in Germany. Formally accepted the division of Christianity in Germany, people were now free to choose between Lutherism and Catholicism.
The church ignored his requests to stop advertising that you needed to buy these things to get into Heaven, because he believed you could get into Heaven by faith.
Luther wrote 95 complaints about the Catholic Church. By story he nailed the complaints onto the Church door.
Since the Catholic Church didn't respond to Luther's requests, Luther called over German princes and they created a German church. The church didn't like this so they told the people he was the antichrist. But the people already liked him because he basically stood up for them.

The common people and German lords agreed with him so they were on his side, this ended up being a revolution. They basically "over threw" the Catholic Church.
