- - - - 1865, Illinois and Indiana: These states had codes which included laws that targeted unemployed blacks,and restricted their ownership of property.
      - 1911, Laws were created in Canada affecting blacks property, health, and literacy rights. When a party of 200 Blacks, adhering to all rules, arrived in Manitoba in 1911, the federal government decided to ban black immigrants outright.
      - “Black codes” were passed in the South between 1865 and 1866 to replace the political and social controls of slavery that were removed by the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. These laws prohibited ownership of property, as well as job opportunities.
      - Property Acts were passed in the late 19th century in most common-law provinces giving women the right to control their own property, the laws made no provision for the equitable division of property
