Flexibility and Mobility
for Strength Sessions
Critical Review
Is the study relevant? / is it current?
Does the study add anything new?
What type of research question is being asked?
Was the study design appropriate for the research question?
Did the study methods address the most important potential sources of bias?
Are there any conflicts of interest?
Is the study REAL?
Practical Application
What challenges and dilemas may the coach face? ie, prior knowledge, time constraints
Try to solve these issues ie, could the athlete put together their own routine over time and incorporate that into their week training themselves?
BW differences in their athletes / pain thresholds of the athletes (this could effect how much effort is put into a mobility routine).
Stretching is boring for those that are not good at it - how could this be overcome? New ideas - ie, voodoo flossing (temp), vibrating foam rollers - keep up to date with new ways of improving flexibility.
Introduction to mobility and flexibility.
Does flexibility cause limitations when performing a technical lift such as snatch?
What factors contribute to a 'good lift' - Ernst (2016) / Fry et al (2006)
What does it take to be a good lifter? lower extremity power, muscular strength, flexibility and technique - if any of these elements are lacking, what could happen? ie injury.
Injuries specifically to knees, shoulders and lower back
Prophylactic rehab tools such as the OHS test (National Academy of Sports Medicine, 2014) ?????
What is the OHS test? Bell et al (2012) Can chronic stretching increase performance by increasing the compliance of muscles?
Brief introduction to the OHS
Main Coaching Points
What problems may arise during practical application?
How could a coach incorporate this into their athletes training sessions?
First Research - 7- Weeks of Yoga Training and its Effects on Flexibility, Rate of Force Development and Jump Height in Olympic Lifters.
Second Research - Kelly Starrett - Becoming a Supple Leopard
Third Research - FMS?
