Treating Common Sporting Injuries
Massages
Preventing and Treating Injury
A physical therapy used for injury prevention and soft tissue injury treatment
Reduces pain and improves circulation
Moves fluid and nutrients through damaged tissue
Increases joint mobility and flexibility
Breaks down scar tissue from previous injures
Flushes toxins from a damaged area
It realigns and stretches connective tissue fibres releasing tension and pressure
Do Not Use Massage
Contusions/Wounds
Ligament and Tendon Ruptures
Surgery
Surgery is a relatively common procedure for elite athletes
Key Hole Surgery - Small incision is made and a tiny camera is used to guide repair
Open Surgery - Incision is made to repair or reconstruct damaged structures
Stretching
Can increase the rate of recovery
Acute Phase - 3 days of injury no stretching should occur
Long Term - Increase range of motion including static and dynamic stretches
Mid Phase - Active Rehabilitation of muscles and stretching takes place to increase tension and allow tissue to stretch
Cold/Heat Therapies
Heat Therapies - Causes vasodilation and increase blood flow used with chronic injures
Cold Therapies - Causes vasoconstriction of blood vessels which reduces blood flow which reduces inflammation and pain used with acute injuries
Anti Inflammatory Drugs
These reduce swelling from the damaged area which helps to prevent any further damage. However participation should stop even though the pain has decreased
Physiotherapy
Fractures
Stress - Rest for around 2 weeks. Strengthening exercises to strengthen the connective tissues and muscles around the bones
Simple - Initial PRICE method used. Medical attention required ambulance may be needed. Severe fractures may require surgery
Sprain
Seek medical attention. Use PRICE, immobilise and support. In extreme ruptures reconstructive surgery required
Torn Cartilage
Physiotherapy, Hydrotherapy and anti-inflammatory drugs
Dislocation
Use PRICE, seek medical attention to align the joint
Exercise Induced Muscle Damage
