Constructivism

For the professional choice activity, I decided to map out my understanding of the three major constructivists learning theories we learned about this evening. There are strengths and weaknesses to all three. The information processing model seems to make intuitive sense as it does a good job of visually showing how we learn. However, I think it is an over simplification. It doesn’t explain how students are able to make their own meaning. I do like its focus on meta cognition which seems to be transferable to classroom skills. Ultimately, I tend to agree a bit more with both Vygotsky and Piaget’s theories. They both focus on the ability of a learner to construct knowledge rather than being passive recipients of sensory inputs. My issue with Piaget’s theory is his focus on development happening in a linear fashion with little deviation. Vygotsky’s theory of socio-culture learning makes the most sense to me and will impact my future teaching the most. Learning takes place through interactions between the learner and a more knowledgeable other who is able to scaffold a student to achieve a level outside their current ability. I think this theory helps to explain how knowledge is constructed as well as how we can use complex tools such as language to share this created knowledge.
