What is employee voice?
Definitions:
- "Any attempt at all to change rather than escape from an objectionable state of affairs" - Hirschman
- An employee's communication of ideas, suggestions or concerns
- Usually communicated to people who have the ability to take action/bring about change
In reality:
- Most employees feel unsafe to use their voice
- Limited protection is provided for employees who do speak up
- Many remain silent and believe that their input will be ignored
EV influences:
- Level of peace or violence
- Behaviours of employees within and outside an organisation
- An organisation's brand (both negatively and for reputation building/competitive advantage)
Purpose:
- Articulation of individual dissatisfaction
- Contribution to management decision making
- Expression of collective bargaining
- Demonstration of mutually cooperative relations
