Animal Issues
Blood sports
Natural Moral Law
For: Aquinas said that humans can use animals as they like and the pain and suffering is fair. It is considered a legitimate use of animals and he has no concerns for their pain or suffering.
Against: The Catholic Church says that "men owe animals kindness". If you kill an animals, how can it fulfil the end by which it was created for by God.
-
Evaluation
In Summa Theologica, Aquinas uses the example of killing another persons ox is bad, no because it is murder but it is theft :ox:.

Natural Moral Law:
For:
:+1: Dominionshipis supported by the Bible; Genesis tells us 'subdue' the earth.
:+1: Aquinas adopts Aristotle's hierarchy of the souls.
:+1: Animal suffering is only concerning if humans inflict cruelty on them, because there might be an issue with our morality.
:+1: If it help treat a terminal illness, then it helps fulfil the primary precept of preserving (human) life. Catholic church says testing must be 'within reasonable limits' and inflict minimal suffering.
:+1: Catholic church sees the world as anthropocentric and thus humans should take priority.
Against:
:-1:: According the hierarchy of souls all animals have an end, and it is wrong to interfere with that end. Furthermore, Christians believe that God created all life and therefore should decide when to take away it.
:-1: How trust worthy is Aristotle's accounts of the hierarchy of souls.
:-1: Scientific experiments came after Aquinas and therefore do not apply.
:-1: Cloning is playing the role of God and interfering with his creation.
:-1: Catechisms of Cath Church says that animals are created by God and have intrinsic value; 'men owe them kindness'. Pope Francis rejects anthropocentrism.
Against: Aquinas said that it is morally wrong for a person to inflict pain on an animal -not for the animals sake but because the person "might go on to do the same with men". It goes against primary precept of worshipping God.
Against: Modify God's blueprint for creation so goes against the Primary Precept of worshipping God.
Natural Moral Law: If it help treat a terminal illness, then it helps fufil the primary precept of preserving (human) life.

Theft
NML
For: Aquinas said in Summa Theologica that theft in extreme cases is acceptable (eg theft of food for a starving person). This is also a proportionalist response.
Against: It violates the primary precept of living in an ordered society and the secondary precepts of 'do not steal'. Goes against double effect.
Evaluation: is Aquinas' natural moral law too rigid? Is there such a thing as socially acceptable theft?

Lying
Natural Moral Law
For: Aquinas said that its okay to hold back the truth, "hide the truth prudently, by keeping it back". An example is a mad axe murderer.
Against: Lying is always wring as it violates the primary precepts of living in an ordered society, the secondary precept of do not lie. In extreme scenarios, withholding the truth is acceptable. Aquinas said in Summa Theologica that lying was "unnatural" and "it is not lawful to tell a lie in order to deliver someone from danger."
Evaluation: There could be some situations where not lying would be immoral, and lying could be used to achieve the best outcome. What about a white lie?
Natural Moral Law
Against: According the hierarchy of souls all animals have an end, and it is wrong to interfere with that end.
Evaluation: How trust worthy can this be considering that he relies on Aristotle's accounts of the hierarchy of souls.
For: Aquinas justifies this, and he justifies this uisng the Bible.
