Janie and Joe Kylie Weaver 10/22
Her Head Scarf represented Joe's power that he had over her. He didnt want her to show her beauty so he made her wear a head scaft
"Her hair was not going to show in the store"(Hurston 55).
Her hair represents her beauty and Joe did not want her to show her beaut to the other men.
The horizon represents the change that Janie wanted. Joe was that change
Joe himself represented power. He had the power to take Janie's voice away and he had the power to make her do things that he wanted her to do
Scared
:
The significance to Jane is that she dose not want to be scared to express her voice in her marriage. She wants to be able to be herself and get treated right. The significance this has on the novel is that is she is sad she is not happy and when she is not happy she still has not found the type of love she wants.
Unhappy
"Then she starched and ironed her face, forming it into just what people wanted to see, and opened up the window and cried,"Come heah people! Jody is dead. Mah husband is gone from me"." (Hurston 87).
The conflict of this is she left her first husband because she was not happy and not that she is with Joe she still is not happy.
By him taking away her voice it shows that he has the power over her and she cant do anything that symbolizes freedom or fun
"Thank yuh for yo' compliments but mah wife don't know nothin bout no speack makin"(Hurston 43).
unappreciated
Joe at first cared for her and flaunted her off but after awhile he quit showing her off and quit doing things for her. He started to pick on her yell at her hit her etc.
The significance this had on Janie was she wanted someone to love her and meet her needs and Joe was not the one for her. He quit
Difficult
Her and Joes relationship was difficult she wanted to expresses her self and he didnt want her to .The theme of the book is that you should not let someone take your voice away. She he was breaking the theme of the book .
Fiend
Janie and Joe's relationship was fiend because she had no freedom to do anything but work in the store. The conflict is that Janie left Logan because he wanted her to work no joe too has her working.
Disengaged
Joe was disengaged from Janie's life. He did not know how she felt and he only thought about what would help him out. The conflict in this was Janie wanted him to think of her and understand where she was coming from when she was not happy or when she was upset.
Love was dwindling
Janie wanted love in her marriage but the longer they were married the less they loved each other. She left Logan because there was not love. She thought that she could find love with Joe. At first everything was goo then the older they got the more Joe wanted to be controlling they more they fell out of love. They fell so much out of love that when Joe died Janie was not sad. She had to act sad but she was actually not.
Which symbol did she associate with Joe?
